Iker Casillas retires from football at the age of 39. After an illustrious career, he finally brings it to a cessation. With several awards and achievements, he is certainly one of the best. Iker Casillas Fernandez is a former Spanish professional footballer. To clarify, he played as a goalkeeper. Casillas was a genius in his position. He had the ability to make impressive saves. And had quick reactions. Another impressive skill was his athleticism. Above all, he is an excellent shot-stopper. The man at goal spent most part of his career at Real Madrid. He is, however, one of a few players to attain over 1000 professional career matches. Further records he holds include; the most clean sheets in champions league as well as the Spanish national team.

Casillas had a heart attack back in 2019. Gratefully, he recovered. As a result, he could not play for Port FC. After that, he revealed his intentions to run for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation. While he recovered, he joined the Porto coaching team. On the other hand, Casillas tweeted his retirement. And said a few other things about his journey so far. Similarly, Real Madrid FC also tweeted about the goalkeeper. They showed appreciation and wished him the best. Sergio Ramos, his former teammate also reacted to the news. He thanked Casillas and referred to him as a legend.

Iker was born on the 20th of May 1981. His place of birth is Mostoles in the province of Madrid. His father’s name is Jose Luis Casillas. And he was a civil servant in the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, his mother was a hairdresser. Her name is Maria del Carmen Fernandez Gonzalez. At the time, his parents moved from their place of residence.

Casillas’s younger brother, Unai is seven years younger. He played as a central midfielder for CD Mostoles. His name is of Basque origin. This is due to the family connection to the origin of the place. Apparently, their paternal grandfather settled in the city of Bilbao. As he was an officer of the civil guard. As a result, Iker’s father also lived there. So, he grew up in the same city too.

The number one shot-stopper retires a legend. From a young age, he made and broke several records. Firstly, he made 725 appearances for Real Madrid. As he spent 16years of his career at the Bernabeu. During his time there, he won 3 champions league titles and 5 La Liga crowns. Similarly, he reached a great height on international duty. He contributed largely to Spain’s 2010 world cup victory. In addition, he also won two successive European championships in 2008 and 2012. Between 2010 and 2016, Casillas won 167 international caps for Spain. The only person with more caps is Sergio Ramos. Iker Casillas retires from football with so many accolades to his name.
